Assessment

At NTC, your success as a learner is important. Assessment of learning is the process of measuring that success. Programs, and courses, at NTC are carefully developed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviors you need to be successful in the workplace and to meet employer expectations. That information is translated into course competencies, program (learning) outcomes, and core abilities (employability or “soft skills”)

Course Competencies

Skills learners will use in the occupational setting included in a particular course.

Program Learning Outcomes

Exit-level occupational skills and abilities.

Core Abilities

Core Abilities are broad outcomes or skills. These skills go beyond the context of a specific course or program and are the skills employers tell us they expect employees to have.

NTCs Core Abilities:

  • Communicate clearly
  • Act responsibly
  • Work productively
  • Work cooperatively
  • Demonstrate integrity
  • Think critically and creatively
  • Develop global awareness

The most important reason NTC assesses student learning is to make sure that you have gained competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviors you will need for a satisfying and successful career. Assessment of learning is performance-based. Performance based means you will need to show your instructors what you have learned. You as the learner are the most important part of instruction in your courses. Performance based assessment will determine what you must be able to do as a result of your learning, identify how you can demonstrate that you have learned those skills, and verify whether or not you pass your courses.

Assessment also provides NTC with valuable information about student success, which helps us continually improve the education we provide to students. Data collected from assessment processes help instructors identify opportunities for improvement within courses and programs. Assessment also enables NTC to demonstrate to taxpayers, employers, the community, and our accrediting bodies that we are achieving our educational mission.
