Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship Programs
An apprenticeship is a method of training that combines paid, on-the-job experience with classroom instruction. Apprenticeship application procedures vary by trade, geography and sector, and are offered in three occupational areas: construction, industrial, and service.

Preparing for apprenticeship includes both physical and mental readiness. Many of the skilled trades require physical strength and endurance. Academic requirements and background vary from trade to trade. Most trades require that applicants are high school graduates or the equivalent, and require a strong math background including courses in Algebra and Geometry.

Apprentices are supervised on the job by skilled journeypersons. Typically, apprentices attend day school for eight hours every other week or in blocks and receive a normal hourly salary while attending class during the day. Some apprenticeship trades also require night school.

The application process for construction trades is governed by a trade committee composed of equal representation of employees and employers in that trade. Each committee develops its own policies and practices, which are approved by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards.

Construction Trades:
Electrician
Heat & Frost Insulator
Plumber
Sheetmetal
Steamfitter
Mason/Bricklayer/Tile Setter

Applying for an apprenticeship in the industrial sectors requires applying directly to the employer or company that sponsors the apprenticeship program. Several apprenticeship sites require that the employer hire the apprenticeship candidate in another capacity prior to beginning apprenticeship. The employer determines the criteria to place applicants into the program, either through collective bargaining agreements or other criteria.

Industrial Trades:
Electrical and Instrumentation

Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic
