Distance Learning

Distance learning is a broad term used to describe any class in which instruction takes place outside the traditional classroom setting.

It refers to alternative methods of delivering instruction such as:

Online instruction - using Blackboard and SkillSoft e-Learning via the Internet.
NOTE: Blackboard courses are normally not available until the start date of the course or as indicated by the instructor.

Interactive television (ITV) - ITV is one type of distance education in use by NTC. Interactive television courses, or ITV courses, offer students at NTC’s regional campuses and many other sites throughout the state the opportunity to take a class together without having to meet in one place.

Telecourses - A telecourse, also known as a video course, is a complete and integrated instructional system that generally includes videocassette or television programs, a textbook, and a variety of other instructional materials. At NTC, students in telecourses are required to attend an orientation meeting, meet their instructor, and review the courses syllabus.

Computer conferencing (NetMeeting) - Students must have basic computer skills such as using a mouse and an Internet browser, and have a fundamental understanding of how to use a computer. Students intending on completing as associate degree in Computer Information Systems also need to meet the program requirements.

Online Courses (Internet)

Online courses offer flexible, self-paced study, available 7 days a week, 24-hours a day. No travel is required. You may use your home computer or one at an NTC campus. Each of the six NTC campuses have computer labs that students may use to access their online courses.

All online students must have an e-mail address and basic computer skills such as using a mouse, an Internet browser, and have a fundamental understanding of how to use a computer.

Online learning requires strong independent study skills so we encourage students to take our online assessment to determine whether online learning is the right choice.

Some advanced courses have prerequisites. Please check the specific course prerequisites before you register for a class.

Some of NTC’s online courses begin at the start of the semester and must be completed by the end of the semester. Other online courses allow students to enroll anytime and are given an end date for completing the course when they register (usually 18 weeks). Learning activities are posted on the web and communication between the instructor and students takes place via e-mail.

NTC has two formats for online courses:

Blackboard: NTC's standard for online course delivery. Students enrolled in a Blackboard course will be required to complete an online orientation.

SkillSoft e-learning: Northcentral Technical College has partnered with SkillSoft (formerly SmartForce), the e-learning Company, to offer online e-learning courses.

There are minimum computer requirements for taking online courses. Please review these requirements in our frequently asked questions.

New online courses are currently being developed and some are offered only in certain semesters. If you have questions or needmore information, please call (715) 675-3331, Ext. 4004 or e-mail us.
