When will financial aid for the semester be disbursed?

ANSWER: Grants, loans, and scholarships will be applied directly to your student account as the money is received. After tuition and fees are deducted, the remaining balance will be mailed to the you as a refund. Make sure NTC has your correct mailing address. Refund checks will not be available for pick up.

Please see the Financial Aid Homepage for Disbursement dates.

If I drop a class during the course of a semester and my enrollment changes from being a full-time student to a half-time student, will this affect the financial aid I received?

ANSWER: Yes, your enrollment level (full-time, half-time, etc.) affects how much money you may receive. See Enrollment Status for more information.

Does it cost anything to apply for financial aid?

ANSWER: No. Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is FREE!

When should I apply for financial aid?

ANSWER: You can begin applying for financial aid in the January prior to the fall you plan to attend. The earlier you apply, the better, as some resources are limited and may run out. Apply as soon as you and your family complete your taxes for the previous year.

How do I know if I will be eligible for financial aid?

ANSWER: When you complete the FAFSA, you will be considered for all types of Federal and State grants, loans and work-study. All students who meet general eligibility requirements will at least be eligible for the Federal Direct Loan Program.  After completing the FAFSA, you will receive your SAR (Student Aid Report) indicating what your EFC (Expected Family Contribution amount) is. This number is used to determine how much in Pell grants you could qualify for.

I probably don't qualify for aid. Should I apply for aid anyway?

ANSWER: Yes. Many families mistakenly think they don't qualify for aid and fail to apply. There are some sources of aid, such as unsubsidized Stafford and PLUS loans, that are available regardless of financial need.

Do I have to be a full-time student to receive financial aid?

ANSWER: No. In order to be eligible for loans, you must be registered at least half-time (six credits). If you are registered for less than six credits and are Pell eligible you will receive a less than half-time Pell Grant only.

What happens after I apply for financial aid?

ANSWER: The Federal Processor will process electronically filed FAFSA’s within one week. If you provided an e-mail address on the FAFSA, the processor will email you the Student Aid Report. This report details information you provided and informs you of corrections that may need to be made. The Financial Aid Office also receives your information electronically as long as you listed NTC as one of your school choices on your financial aid application. Once we receive that file electronically, the Financial Aid Staff will determine if additional information or documentation is required, at which time, you will be sent a letter indicating what is still needed. Processing will stop until those items are received.

I don’t live with my parents. Do I have to have my parents complete their section on the FAFSA? Can I be considered an independent student?

ANSWER: Living on your own doesn’t automatically qualify you as an independent student. The Federal Government considers you dependent until you are 24 years old, married, have dependents of your own (for whom you provide more than half of their support), are pursuing a graduate degree, are an orphan or ward of the court, or are a veteran of the US armed forces. In certain circumstances, the Financial Aid office may consider doing dependency override. Please call the financial aid office at 888.NTC.7144, Ext. 5681 to obtain forms for consideration of a dependency override.

My parents did not claim me on their tax return. Am I required to supply their income and asset information on the FAFSA?

ANSWER: If you answered "no" to all of the questions under Section 2 of the FAFSA, you must complete the parent section as well as the student section. If you answered "yes" to any of the questions under Section 2 of the FAFSA, you are not required to supply parental information.

My parents are separated or divorced. Which parent is responsible for filling out the FAFSA?

ANSWER: If your parents are separated or divorced, the custodial parent is responsible for filling out the FAFSA. The custodial parent is the parent with whom you lived with the most during the past 12 months. Note that this is not necessarily the same as the parent who has legal custody. If you did not live with one parent more than the other, the parent who provided you with the most financial support should fill out the FAFSA. If you have not received any support from either parent during the past 12 months, use the most recent calendar year for which you did receive some support from a parent or lived with either parent.

How much financial aid will I get?

ANSWER: The only way to determine how much you will receive is to fill out the FAFSA. Once we receive your electronic student aid report and any requested documentation, we will package your aid and it can then be viewed online in your my>NTC portal (accessible from NTC’s website, www.ntc.edu).

What if I receive a scholarship from my high school or a community group? Do I have to notify the financial aid office?

ANSWER: Yes. All types of financial assistance, scholarships, other community agency grants, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation grants, Dislocated Worker benefits, etc., must be reported to the Financial Aid Office to be coordinated with your federal and state aid.
