2012 Award Winner
Janice Gulsvig graduated from NTC in 1974 with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. After working locally for a few years, she moved to Minneapolis where she continued her education and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota.
"I found that the educational footing I received at NTC prepared me very well for entering the four-year college system," said Gulsvig. "I also discovered that the practical and clinical experience I received at NTC was far superior to that which I experienced at the University of Minnesota, which tended to be more theoretical."
After earning her bachelor's degree, Gulsvig worked in long-term care administration and management at several facilities, eventually taking a position in Arkansas as corporate director of education and training for Beverly Enterprises, the largest nursing home company in the United States.
In 2001, Gulsvig and her husband returned to Wausau and established My InnerView, which provided nursing homes, assisted living homes, hospice organizations, pharmacies, and other ancillary post-acute healthcare organizations with a way to measure and improve quality performance. The company had a staff of 55 and serves customers in every state. The Gulsvigs recently sold the company and began two new business ventures- Align, Your First 30 Partner which brings post-acute care providers, patients, and their families together as they focus on a successful recovery after a hospital stay and Living Life Solutions which evaluates home environments for safety and home modifications, allowing individuals to live as long as possible in their homes as they age.
"My career has taken me far away from the clinical nursing experience I was originally prepared for," noted Gulsvig. "I would encourage all NTC students and graduates to broaden their perspective to see all of the wonderful opportunities and potential in today's ever-changing world."
Gulsvig shares her knowledge by being a presenter at educational forums and state and national conferences on topics such as satisfaction surveys, use of data, and quality improvement in the post-acute care service sectors.
Gulsvig also shares her expertise with NTC serving as a Foundation Board member since 2010. She has been an intricate part of the formation of an Alumni Association at NTC and provides leadership to the NTC Alumni Advisory Council.
