Abstract
A short summary of an article or book.
Call Number
The classification number that indicates where a book is located. We use the Dewey decimal classification system which usually begins with numbers followed by letters and more numbers. An example of a call number is 686.23042 F455. In this example, 686.23042 refers to the subject and the F455 refers to the author.
There may be a letter or letters before the number. An R indicates the book is located in the reference section. An OS indicates the book is in the oversize section. Fictional hardcover books have an F before the call number and are located in the fiction section. All paperbacks have a PB before the call number and are located in the paperback section.
Other types of media are indicated by letters preceding the call number such as VT (videotape), CS (cassette), G (guide), KT (kit), MS (computer diskette), or CD (CD-ROM).
Citation
The information which cites a work. Includes the title of the article or book, title of the journal, date of publication, volume number, and page number.
Dewey Decimal Classification
A method for classifying books that divides them into ten main groups, each represented by numbers. Each group is broken into more specialized fields. When the classification becomes very fine, decimals are used to represent specific areas. A brief explanation of the system is as follows:

Periodicals, Serials
Magazines and newspapers. Click on Resource List for a complete listing of the NTC library's periodical and newspaper holdings.
Periodicals Index
A list of citations to magazine articles, usually searchable by author or subject. Most indexes are web-based, purchased through subscriptions. Some of these indexes allow you to search by keywords (Boolean searching), date, periodical, article title, as well as subject and author. Many CD-ROM indexes provide the full text of articles and/or an abstract.

Books that are useful for answering research questions. They cannot be checked out and are shelved in the reference section on the main level of our library. Reference books have an "R" in front of the call number.
Reserve Materials
Books, articles, or AV materials that are held at the circulation desk for use by many students. Reserve materials are usually selected by an instructor for his/her class. Checkout times vary depending on the instructor's request.
Stacks
An area of tall shelving containing books. Books are arranged by call number.
Web-Based Catalog
The computerized catalog of a library's collection. Our web-based catalog is WebVoyage and is searchable by subject, author, title, and keyword. An automated catalog may also be referred to as an online catalog, OPAC, or computerized catalog.
