Partnering for a Better Tomorrow
Students in Spencer and surrounding communities have the opportunity to train in production welding thanks to an educational agreement between Northcentral Technical College and the School District of Spencer. Under the agreement, NTC is providing production welding training at Spencer High School, as well as welding equipment purchased with funds from the SPARK program. The new partnership will benefit both high school students and adult learners in the western corridor of the NTC District.
Spencer High School students can earn college credit, at no cost, while still in high school through transcripted credit. High school students also benefit from a collaborative effort between NTC and the school districts of Abbotsford, Colby, Loyal, Spencer and Stratford allowing students to participate in the SPARK program, which offers individuals the opportunity to obtain skills and knowledge in manufacturing.
Adult learners in the community benefit from the ability to earn a Production Welding Certificate in the evenings and on weekends with no need to travel, utilizing the Spencer High School technology facilities when school is not in session.
Technology has significantly impacted the manufacturing sector, creating clean, comfortable and safe work environments. Manufacturing careers also have above average earning potential, making production welding a solid career choice for anyone.
The $1.9 million Specific Production Academics for Regional Knowledge (SPARK) grant was awarded under the President’s Community-Based Job Training Grants as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. The grant supports educational training through NTC from April 2008 to April 2011; however, at the conclusion of the SPARK program, NTC will continue to offer production welding training at Spencer High School.
