Loans – Exit Counseling

All graduating students who have borrowed Stafford loans while attending college must complete an exit counseling session.  This is required by the Federal Government for all loan holders. It educates graduates on the importance of paying back their loans and the consequences that may be encountered if they do not pay them back.  The Exit Counseling session puts your student loan borrowing in perspective and provides you with information to manage your student loan debt.  Your cooperation in meeting this requirement is greatly appreciated and required!

Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation’s Online Student Loan Counseling lets you meet student loan exit counseling requirements via the Web.  This interactive counseling session will help you plan for the repayment of your student loans.

You may access the exit counseling session by clicking on the link below:

The exit counseling session you have been asked to complete will empower you to make good financial choices as you enter repayment on your Stafford Loan(s).  After this session, you will understand what to expect throughout the repayment process, your options in case you are unable to or have trouble repaying the loan and where to go for information and advice.

Repayment
You will have a six-month "grace period" before you begin repayment. During this period, you'll receive repayment information, and you'll be notified of your first payment due date. You're responsible for beginning repayment on time. Payments are usually due monthly. The first payment on your Stafford Loan will be due the very next month that follows the conclusion of your six-month grace period. About six weeks before your first payment is due, your lender or servicer will send you a statement listing your monthly payment amount. If you become enrolled in classes at NTC or pursue a degree through another college and will be enrolled at least half-time please contact the servicer of your student loans. You may be eligible for an in-school deferment, which would postpone payments while you are enrolled in school at least half-time.

If you're facing a large amount of debt, you might be tempted to skip or postpone some of your student loan payments. Instead, you should immediately contact your loan servicer to discuss other repayment plan options, and to find out whether you’re eligible for a deferment or forbearance. They'll work with you to help you avoid the serious consequences of delinquency and default.

If you borrowed a Stafford Loan or Parent PLUS Loan, your first point of contact should be Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation, toll free phone number: 1.800.377.9095.
