NTC's Work Study Program Information

This program is aimed at providing part-time jobs on campus for financially eligible students, allowing them to earn money to help pay educational expenses. This program encourages community service and work related to courses of study. Eligibility is determined by completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The program is set up on a "work and earn" basis. The Financial Aid Office awards a budgeted dollar amount for the school year depending upon financial need as determined by the financial aid application (FAFSA). There is limited funding available under this program each school year.

What requirements must I meet to participate in the work-study program?

  • Have been offered and officially accepted a work-study award for the current academic year.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of six credits.
  • Maintain academic progress toward completion of an associate degree or diploma (see Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards).
NOTE: If you are interested in Federal Work-Study but weren't awarded it, see the Financial Aid Office about your eligibility.

How will I be paid?
You will be paid an hourly wage. Hours worked will be recorded by you, the student,
on time sheets distributed by the Financial Aid Office.
Federal Work-Study earnings are disbursed bi-weekly and are processed for the actual
hours worked. You must have either a savings or checking account where your
earnings may be electronically deposited.

Does having a work-study award guarantee that I will get a job?
All jobs are competitive and may require a resume and interview.

Do I have to pay the money back?
A work-study award is not a loan. It is an award for you to earn and use. There is no penalty if the award is not earned. You do not pay it back.

Are taxes taken out of my work-study earnings?
Yes, if you earn enough according to IRS tax rules.

Can I work as many hours as I want?
No. The amount you earn can’t exceed your total Federal Work-Study award. When assigning work hours, your employer will consider your class schedule and your academic progress. Work schedules are generally quite flexible to accommodate your classes and study time.
