A key goal of the VIP Program
is to help people adjust to a vision-oriented world. We
offer diagnostic evaluation to gauge the extent of a client's
impairment. Once that is established, we respond with services
uniquely suited to individual needs. Two rehabilitation
instructors specialize in orientation and mobility, low
vision assessment, and the use of adaptive equipment. Two
other instructors teach ADL (activities of daily living
skills), designed to help clients reach a maximum level
of independence. Skills include food preparation, personal
management, home management, consumer awareness, as well
as Braille and diabetes management.
Because communication is such an important
part of everyday life, the program has an instructor who
teaches total communications, including typing, spelling,
and word processing via computer speech.
These professionals are assisted by a career
specialist who provides guidance in career choices. A counselor
and psychologist are also available to students who may
need personal or in-depth vocational counseling.
Since employment is a key goal of life
skills training, NTC puts a high premium on out placement
assistance for our learners. Help is provided with transportation,
research, improve interviewing skills, resume writing,
and career counseling. The college also has access to adaptive
equipment and consultants that can help clients fit into
the workplace. Close ties are maintained with the Wisconsin
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation; Northern Valley
Workshop, a sheltered workplace; and other agencies.
