Student Profile
Brittney Johnson, 20, graduated in May 2010 from NTC’s Administrative Assistant Associate Degree program (now known as the Administrative Professional Associate Degree). Brittney grew up in Tigerton, Wisc., and when it came time to plan for her future she chose NTC because of the convenient location, financial aid options and the flexible class schedules.
“I thought NTC would provide me with a great education, and my commute was only 13 minutes,” said Johnson. “NTC is a great school. Everyone is always willing to help you if you ever have questions. The instructors and staff are always there for you.”
Understanding the financial impact of going to college, Brittney applied for financial aid. She earned work-study hours, and worked at the NTC Wittenberg Campus front desk while she was earning her degree. Work Study allows eligible students to find part-time work, usually on campus, that allows them to earn money to help pay educational expenses.
“Financial aid helped me out a lot. The work study position also helped me with my career training. I learned a lot of things on the job,” said Johnson.
Brittney also completed an internship at the NTC Wittenberg Campus. “I would recommend internships to students. You get a lot of experience. Customer service is the number one priority when working behind a front desk and though my degree prepared me in an administrative assistant position, the internship prepared me to work with customers.”
During her time at NTC, Brittney was a member of the Wittenberg Campus Student Governing Board (SGB). “We planned activities around campus like a campus cleanup day, and we honored the graduate and scholarship recipients,” said Johnson. “Being a part of SGB was a positive experience that I would suggest to other students. We always had fun at the meetings. I’m really glad that I joined the Student Governing Board.”
Brittney’s favorite part about attending NTC was that, “The classes taught me skills I’ll actually use on the job, and I didn’t have problems scheduling classes. It was always easy to find classes that worked for me.”
“I mainly took ITV (interactive television) and NetMeeting classes,” said Johnson. “ITV worked well for me. I liked that even though the teacher wasn’t in my classroom, I could ask questions and they were able to respond to me. I also liked my online classes because you can work at your own pace, and you didn’t have to drive to school, you could work right from home.”
Overall, Brittney said, “I didn’t know what to expect from college. It was a whole new world to me, but the atmosphere is awesome. The campus is really nice. You get that welcome feeling when you walk in, a feeling that it’s the right place to be.”
