Outlines a framework for understanding the interplay of medical, psychological, and social factors in frequently encountered problems among older adults. Delineates clear guidelines for assessing and treating such conditions as depression and anxiety, dementia, psychosis and mania, sleep disturbances, personality disorders, substance abuse, and suicidally. Explores the challenges of diagnosis as symptoms of substance abuse in older individuals sometimes mimic symptoms of other medical and behavioral disorders common among this population. Identifies ways to sustain seniors' independence and overall quality of life while enhancing their adaptive capacities. Assesses boundaries and ethical issues commonly found when working with the aging population. Applies reflective practitioner methods.
