Human Trafficking and Addiction

Presented by Miriam Falk,  J.D., Asst. Attorney General VAWA Resource Prosecutor for Law Enforcement for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Cases. Addiction to drugs and alcohol creates a useful situation for traffickers who are luring a person into “the life” or are controlling someone once they are under the trafficker’s influence and control.  This session will examine how traffickers target those already addicted, use substances to maintain control over individuals within their sphere of influence and exploit addictions to expand their money-making activities. Participants will be able to recognize how addiction fits within the power & control dynamics of human trafficking, and why it creates obstacles to successful interventions and escape from human trafficking for the trafficked individuals.
