Addiction to drugs and alcohol creates a useful situation for traffickers who are luring a person into “the life” or are controlling someone once they are under the trafficker’s influence and control. This session will examine how traffickers target those already addicted, use substances to maintain control over individuals within their sphere of influence and exploit addictions to expand their money-making activities. Participants will be able to recognize how addiction fits within the power & control dynamics of human trafficking, and why it creates obstacles to successful interventions and escape from human trafficking for the trafficked individuals.

The abuse of opioids and other substances have devastated many families throughout the country perpetuating substance use and tragic overdose deaths. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are products available for purchase directly by the public without a prescription from supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and from the Internet. OTC medicines are also easily accessible from a family member’s or friend’s medicine cabinet. Unfortunately, many teenagers and adults make the mistake of experimenting and abusing OTC medicines which can lead to disastrous outcomes. This presentation spotlights the abuse of common and easily obtained OTC medicines providing in-depth educational information to decreasing this alarming health issue.
