For most people, gambling is fun and entertaining. However, for a small percentage of people, gambling is not about the money – it’s about being in action. It will include facts and realities about this addictive disorder, similarities and differences to other addictions, information on co-occurring disorders and special populations as well as specific tools, including Self-Exclusion, for use in screening, assessment and treatment of this progressively damaging and destructive addiction.

Track B: Assessment 101 and Therapeutic Alliance- AM- 3 hrs
Presenter: Lorie A. Goeser, BA, ICS, CSAC

Description
Assessment is a crucial start to the treatment experience for a client. For the counselor it has many components the need to assess the strengths, challenges and service need for the client as well as the responsibility to meet the statutory requirements of the service. This encounter can be an opportunity to open the door to hope to the client seeking recovery as well as having their input to plan the next step in their treatment/recovery process to engage them to want to take the next step. This session is how to help the client connect to the next step and help the counselor complete their obligations of the assessment process as a positive experience for both.

Track B: Aging & Addiction the Hidden Population - PM- 3 hours
Presenter: Sheila Weix, MSN, RN, CARN
Description
This session will explore the neurobiology of addiction and how this affects this population in the recovery process. To learn the factual data and how this may not align with myths regarding this age group due to ageism and how to address this challenge to engage the client in a specific recovery process that is unique to their service need. As this population continues to grow, it is an area of practice more clinicians will have the opportunity to work with.

It can also be one of the most challenging practices for the clinician in how to structure the group process to meet the needs of a variety of clients, and meet the evidence-based practice guidelines. This session will help the clinician in the pre-planning process as well as implementation and evaluation of the evidence-based group therapy practice for the substance abuse client.
