What is the CARES Act?

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides funding to institutions of higher education to support college students with direct emergency cash grants in cases where student’s lives and educations have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak. NTC received $741,189 to assist students that have incurred expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. Eligible expenses include food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, child care, or other related expenses.

Does the CARES Act emergency assistance funding need to be repaid?

No, the CARES Act emergency assistance funding is federal grant assistance that does not need to be repaid.

Am I eligible to apply?

  • Eligible students must meet basic eligibility criteria for federal financial aid. The NTC CARES Fund team will use Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) data to determine your eligibility. If you are enrolled for spring 20’ and eligible to file a FAFSA but have not yet filed for 2019-20 and need assistance, please file a FAFSA at studentaid.gov. If you are enrolled for summer and/or fall 20’ and eligible to file a FAFSA but have not yet filed for 2020-21 and need assistance, please file a FAFSA at studentaid.gov
  • Eligible students who incurred expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19, such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, child care, or other related expenses.
  • After receiving additional guidance from the U.S. Department of Education, Northcentral Technical College is requiring that eligible students must be enrolled in college-level credit for the semester for which they are requesting assistance and accepted into programs that are eligible for federal financial aid (Title IV eligible). All associate degrees are financial aid eligible and most (but not all) Technical Diploma programs are financial aid eligible. Certificate programs are not financial aid eligible and are not eligible for CARES emergency assistance funding. If you are uncertain of your enrollment status, please contact your student success advisor.
  • Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Education does not allow these funds to be used for international students, undocumented students, undeclared (non-matriculated) students or students enrolled in fully online programs (virtual college).  It will not cover students in dual credit courses, GED, ELL or continuing education. If you are a student from one of these groups, there are other types of emergency aid from NTC available. Please email the NTC CARES Fund team (cares@ntc.edu) for details on applying for these emergency aid programs.
  • The deadline for spring 2020 semester funding was May 15, 2020. Because a number of students have asked for and been given an extension to complete their spring semester courses, students with active course extensions may still submit an application to request spring semester CARES funding. Applications for the spring semester must be submitted before you complete your spring semester classes. Eligible expenses must be related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19. CARES funding cannot be used to replace lost wages.  An application to request funding for summer is now available. Applications for summer must be submitted by the final day of classes for your summer 2020 semester. If you have a qualifying expense resulting from the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19 please complete the online application which can be found in your myNTC account under “Billing & Financial Aid.”
