Bill Janssen

bill janssenBill Janssen has not one, but two associate’s degrees from NTC. He first earned a marketing degree in 1978, and went to work for the local division of a Midwest home and auto electronics company. When it went out of business, Bill returned to NTC to pursue a degree in laser technology.

“It seemed like a wonderful career opportunity,” said Janssen. “At the time it was a new and very exciting program. And having completed the marketing program, some of my required core classes and electives were already fulfilled.”

Janssen graduated with his degree in laser technology in 1982. “Upon my graduation I was recruited and hired by a hospital in Columbus, Ohio, which was a bit of a surprise, because I imagined that I’d be working in industry or research. Medical hadn’t even occurred to me, but it turned out to be a very good choice.”

Janssen, who served a number of years on NTC’s Medical Laser Advisory Group, is a certified laser safety officer and a member of the following organizations:

  • American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Z136.3 Subcommittee for the Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities

  • ANSI Z136.7 Subcommittee for Eyewear and Protective Barriers

  • ANSI Z136 (series) for Safe Use of Lasers Editorial Working Group (EWG)

  • Laser Institute of America

  • American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery

As a medical laser specialist, Janssen has assisted in the setup, operation and instrumentation of thousands of medical laser procedures. He also developed accredited laser training programs for physicians, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), nurses, and biomedical engineers at medical centers and university hospitals throughout North America. In addition, he has provided clinical and technical consultation and support to medical laser and device manufacturers, and conducted a series of three laser safety programs at the Marshfield Clinic on behalf of the Laser Institute of America.

Looking back at the education he received at NTC, he had this to say: “I’d be surprised if at that time I had spent over $2500 for books and tuition. When I think of the return on investment, it was, by choice or accident, the wisest decision I could have made.”
