Ernie Tervi “Pay it Forward” Scholarship

Everyone at NTC is better for having known Ernie Tervi, who managed the College’s bookstore for thirty-four years. Whether spearheading the Look Inside scholarship fundraising campaign or allowing students from the Criminal Justice program to “rob” the bookstore as part of a class exercise, Ernie was a shining example of “paying it forward.”

“Ernie really cared about our students,” said NTC Foundation Executive Director Kelly Fischer. “He was always looking for ways to help them.”

Ernie died June 15, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Before his death, fellow employees established the “Pay it Forward” scholarship in his honor. Ernie chose the criteria for the scholarship, which requires recipients to demonstrate their commitment to paying it forward by helping others just as they are helped by the scholarship. One $250 scholarship will be awarded each fall.

Members of Wausau Lodge #238 Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks recently contributed $1,000 to the scholarship fund in Ernie’s memory. He was a member of the organization for 22 years. “Ernie was a valued member of our organization and a valued member of our community,” commented Exalted Ruler James Weaver. “Even when he was facing his worst adversity, he was always worried about others and always there to give part of himself. He had a great sense of humor and was never in a down mood. It was amazing.”
