(WAUSAU, Wis.) – The Marathon County Dairy Herd Improvement Association recently awarded Northcentral Technical College’s (NTC) Agriculture Center of Excellence with the Most Improved Herd Award in the category of dairy milk production.

Since its opening in 2011, NTC’s Agriculture Center of Excellence has grown from 30 cows that produced 55 pounds of milk per cow each day to 99 cows that produce 91 pounds of milk per cow each day. There are 606 milk producing dairy herds in Marathon County and the herd at NTC’s Agriculture Center of Excellence is now ranked in the top 10.

NTC’s dairy herd is managed and cared for by staff at NTC’s Agriculture Center of Excellence, located north of Wausau in the Town of Maine. At this fully operating, 110-acre dairy farm, students receive a rich learning experience through working first-hand with animals, equipment and crops. Over the past four years, the associate degrees offered at NTC’s Agriculture Center of Excellence has grown from one to five including: Dairy Science, Agri-Business, Veterinary Science, Agriculture Equipment Technician and Crop Science (Agronomy). According to 2013 survey data, 100 percent of students are employed six months after graduation from an agriculture program at NTC.

Victoria Pietz, Dean of Agriculture at NTC, was recently presented this award during NTC’s District Board of Trustees meeting by Maria Volpe, Chairperson of NTC’s District Board of Trustees and Dr. Lori Weyers, President of NTC.
