Earlier this fall, Northcentral Technical College (NTC) celebrated the successful completion of its first cohort of the Floor Installation Technician Certificate, a 15-week intensive program designed to meet urgent workforce needs in the floor covering industry.
“This program demonstrates the power of collaborative workforce solutions that change lives and strengthen our regional economy,” said Brad Gast, Dean of Workforce Training, Professional Development and Apprenticeship. “By working side by side with employers and industry leaders, we are shaping programs that prepare individuals for meaningful, high-demand careers that strengthen our communities.”

The cohort completed 300 contact hours of hands-on training in resilient, hardwood, tile and carpet installation. Graduates of the program earned three industry-recognized credentials - Carpet (CFI), Hardwood (NWFA) and Resilient (CFI) - preparing them to step directly into in-demand roles across residential and commercial settings.
“The instructor was a wealth of knowledge, and I got hands-on exposure to a wide range of flooring types,” said graduate Ashtin Holz.
This program is a collaboration between NTC and the Floor Covering Education Foundation (FCEF).
FCEF played a vital role in providing scholarships for every participant in the cohort, helping to remove financial barriers for students pursuing this career path.
“This program reflects a strong collaborative effort to meet critical workforce needs while providing students with industry-recognized credentials that prepare them for successful careers in the flooring installation profession,” said Megan Faulknor Coates, Education Project Manager for the Floor Covering Education Foundation. “FCEF extends its gratitude to Northcentral Technical College and the local flooring community, including the Wisconsin Floor Covering Association, for their ongoing support in offering a program that is truly transforming lives and strengthening the industry.”

Local industry members, including Floorology, Carpet City Flooring Center, Rice’s More Than Floors, Macco’s Floor Covering Center, Betro Floorings, Wedi Corporation and the Wisconsin Floor Covering Association, also supported the program.
“Rice’s More Than Floors was pleased to support the flooring technician program with our resources,” said Brad Lenz. “Our unwavering commitment to doing it right guided our decision to support this program, equipping skilled hands to transform spaces one project at a time.”
As demand for skilled flooring installers continues to grow, NTC encourages interested students and employers to learn more about upcoming cohorts for the Floor Installation Technician certificate.
NTC is also seeking passionate instructors to join this growing area of workforce training.
