We honor our students as they prepare to cross the graduation stage and continue their journey as NTC alumni. These are Kayla’s reflections on her time at NTC.

Q: What do you find interesting/inspiring/compelling about your program?

A: The Human Services program is incredibly inspiring because it focuses on making a tangible difference in people’s lives. It’s compelling to see how the program equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to support and empower those in need. Whether it’s through counseling, social work or community outreach, the impact of human services professionals is profound. They play a critical role in addressing social issues, promoting mental well-being and fostering a sense of community and support. The dedication and compassion of those in the field is truly admirable, and their work has the power to bring about positive change in society.

Q: What will you remember most fondly about your time at NTC?

A: What I will remember most fondly about my time at NTC is the individual growth I experienced and the connections I made with my instructors. Their support and guidance were invaluable, helping me navigate my educational journey and achieve my goals. The overall sense of encouragement and the knowledge I gained was incredibly impactful. These aspects truly shaped my time at NTC and will always hold a special place in my memories.

Q: Please share a memory or highlight that stands out to you.

A: I had a bad car accident in October 2023 that shattered both ankles and broke my femur in three places. I had to be in a wheelchair for three months and then crutches and a boot for three more months. Some faculty that stood out to me were Dr. Tammy Gorski for just being there for me and providing resources when I had my accident, along with my advisor Jessica Katcher and also Christina Lucas. They were all so nice and understanding. When I felt at my lowest, they picked me up and made me feel like I could do it. I was given extra extensions in my classes and ended up passing them all. They were a wonderful support system, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Q: How do you feel about graduating?

A: I am absolutely excited to be graduating. It almost feels surreal because after the accident, I was thinking about dropping out, so this is a big deal for me. I can’t wait and see what’s in store for me when I go on to University of Wisconsin - Green Bay to complete my bachelor’s degree in social work.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: My plan for after graduation is to attend a University of Wisconsin school to get my bachelor’s degree in social work and then move on to my master's degree. I also plan to get a job in the field while I am continuing my education so I can gain more hands-on experience before my next graduation. After participating in an internship, I now realize how crucial hands-on experience is. Applying what you learn in the classroom to real-life situations can be very different.

Q: What are your hopes/dreams/aspirations?

A: My hopes and dreams in the human service field are to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives by providing support and resources to those in need. I aspire to work with diverse communities, addressing social issues and advocating for positive change. Ultimately, I want to help individuals improve their mental health and overall well-being, contributing to a more compassionate and equitable society.

Q: Reflecting on the relationships you’ve built with classmates, instructors and staff, what is one thing you wish you could say to those who have supported you along the way?

A: I would like to say that they were amazing. I learned so much from them, and they were incredibly supportive. I want to thank them for all their help, as I couldn't have graduated without their guidance and encouragement.

Q: If you could go back to your first day at NTC and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

A: If I could go back to my first day of college and give myself one piece of advice, it would be: don’t be scared to ask questions. Use the resources that NTC offers, such as the academic resource center. Your instructors and advisors are your best friends and are there to help you succeed. Also, keep up with deadlines. Don’t fall behind; stay on top of your work, and you’ll be fine.

Q: Reflecting on your growth during your time at NTC, what is one aspect of yourself that you’ve seen evolve the most?  How do you feel about the person you’ve become?

A: I've gained a lot more confidence in myself. Now I know I can push through and accomplish anything I set my mind to. There was a time when I thought it was impossible to finish my classes, but not only did I complete them, I even got A’s in some. It just took perseverance, dedication and the support from my instructors. I am proud of the person I've become. I now apply this newfound confidence in my everyday life. Some days, it feels impossible to juggle being a student, a mom, work and my internship, but I just remember those challenging times in school and realize that nothing is impossible. It’s a lot, but the reward is worth it, and I’ll gain even more confidence from it.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience at NTC that you feel is important to share or that gives perspective to your story?

A: My experience at NTC was unexpected. I never thought that it would impact me as much as it did. I will miss this school and am thankful for everything that I have learned while attending, not only academically, but about myself as well. It has truly been a pleasure.
