Student must have valid Wisconsin RN license and two years work experience (one year in long-term, home health, or rehabilitation care). This course will meet the state requirement for nurses who wish to become nursing assistant instructors.
Provides preparation for the for the national certification examination prepared by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Simulated registry examinations are utilized.
This final clinical course requires students to integrate and apply all knowledge learned in previous courses to the production of high quality images in the clinical setting with minimal direct and primarily indirect supervision . Students apply radiation protection and standard precautions in the production of images in a health care setting while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines. Students are encouraged to demonstrate independent judgment in the performance of clinical competencies.
This course will cover topics related to the delivery of community and mental health care. Specific health needs of individuals, families, and groups will be addressed across the lifespan. Attention will be given to diverse and at-risk populations. Mental health concepts will concentrate on adaptive/maladaptive behaviors and specific mental health disorders. Community resources will be examined in relation to specific types of support offered to racial, ethnic, economically diverse individuals and groups.
This course covers nursing management and professional issues related to the role of the registered nurse. Emphasis is placed on preparing for practice as a registered nurse.
Introduces contemporary healthcare practices for learners interested in a career serving diverse healthcare communities. Learners explore the essential skills required for equitable and inclusive person-centered interactions. Learners examine various health communities, mindful practices, professionalism, problem solving, and patient confidentiality.
Focuses on the use of technology in healthcare. Learners use common business software applications, including word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and databases. Communication methods using technology are addressed. Learners gain experience with using the electronic health record (EHR). Healthcare EHR security issues, social media use, and digital healthcare resources are examined.
Focuses on the component parts of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes and word roots. Students practice formation, analysis and reconstruction of terms. Emphasis on spelling, definition and pronunciation. Introduction to operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems, as well as systemic and surgical terminology.
Prepares learners to perform basic nursing skills under the supervision of a nurse for job entry as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or a home health aide (HHA) in health care agencies. Face-to-face and hybrid classroom, campus lab and clinical instruction are offered at various nursing homes and hospitals throughout the district. Students need to submit an application and complete background check.
This third level clinical course prepares radiography students to perform radiologic procedures on patients with varying degrees of direct and indirect supervision. Students apply radiation protection and standard precautions in the production of radiographic images in a health care setting while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines. An emphasis of the course is the demonstration of communication and critical thinking skills appropriate to the clinical setting.
This course focuses on the development of advanced clinical skills across the lifespan. Content includes advanced intravenous skills, blood product administration, chest tube systems, basic electrocardiogram interpretation and nasogastric/feeding tube insertion.
Introduces learners to the role of radiography in health care. Learners apply healthcare communication techniques. Learners are introduced to legal and ethical considerations, patient interactions and management, patient and provider safety, and pharmacology.
Prepares radiography learners to perform routine radiographic procedures of the chest, abdomen, upper and lower extremities, and pelvis. Course includes considerations for mobile and trauma procedures. Learners apply knowledge of human anatomy to position the patient correctly to achieve and evaluate optimal diagnostic quality images which includes identifying radiographically significant anatomy.
Focuses on preparing the patient and operating room for surgery. Principles of sterile technique are emphasized as the student moves into the scrub role. Lab practice is included.
Provides the foundational knowledge of the occupational environment. Principles of sterilization and disinfection are learned. Surgical instruments are introduced. Preoperative patient care concepts are simulated. Lab practice is included.
Provides the foundational knowledge of surgical core and specialty procedures. Examines the pathophysiology, diagnostic interventions, health sciences, and surgical techniques for a variety of procedures.
Apply basic surgical theories, principles, and procedural techniques in the operating room. Students begin to function as team members under the guidance of the instructor and authorized clinical personnel.
This clinical experience integrates all knowledge learned in the previous courses in transitioning to the role of the graduate nurse. The course promotes relatively independent clinical decisions, delegation, and works collaboratively with others to achieve client and organizational outcomes. Continued professional development is fostered.
This fourth level clinical course prepares radiography students to perform radiologic procedures on patients. The student transitions from direct to indirect supervision as competency performance increases. Students apply radiation protection and standard precautions in the production of radiographic images in a health care setting while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines. Students are encouraged to demonstrate independent judgment in the performance of clinical competencies.
Introduces radiography students to the principles and applications of x-ray technology. Students analyze how x-rays are produced and determine the corrective actions necessary for common equipment malfunctions.
This advanced clinical course requires the student to integrate concepts from all previous courses in the management of groups of clients facing complex health alterations. Students will have the opportunity to further develop critical thinking skills using the nursing process in making clinical decisions. Continuity of care through interdisciplinary collaboration is emphasized.
This intermediate level clinical course develops the RN role when working with clients with complex health care needs. A focus of the course is developing skills needed for managing multiple clients across the lifespan and priorities. Using the nursing process, students will gain experience in adapting nursing practice to meet the needs of clients with diverse needs and backgrounds.
Introduces radiography students to the process and components of imaging. Students determine the factors that affect image quality including contrast, receptor exposure, spatial resolution and distortion.
Explores the content and purpose of medical reports contained in the medical record and designated hardware and software to key medical information. Learners use the mechanics of the English language (grammar, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, numbers, symbols and metric measurement rules), utilize reference resources (text, software, web-based) efficiently and apply proper proofreading and editing techniques for medical documentation.
Prepares learners to interpret clinical documentation that they will encounter in a variety of healthcare settings. Emphasis is placed on understanding the common disorders and diseases of each body system to include the etiology (cause), signs and symptoms, diagnostic tests and results, and medical treatments and surgical procedures.
Introduces learners to the healthcare delivery system, focusing on the various types of healthcare organizations, the roles, responsibilities and interrelationships of healthcare providers and professionals, and the external forces that influence healthcare delivery. Sets an understanding for the expectations and standards related to professional ethics, confidentiality and security of health information. Differentiates the use and structure of healthcare data elements, data standards, and the relationships between them to facilitate primary and secondary record systems, and health information processing. Prepares learners to collect and maintain health data to ensure a complete and accurate health record, according to organizational policies, external regulations and standards.
