Provides a foundation in the science, history, and social context of substance use and addiction. Students will explore drug classifications, theories of addiction, and the biological, psychological, and social effects of substance use on individuals, families, and communities. Cultural factors, public health perspectives, and co-occurring mental health disorders are examined alongside harm reduction approaches. The course focuses on relapse prevention strategies that inform effective, compassionate counseling practice.
