NTC is excited to announce the return of our popular in-classroom workshops focusing on career paths in engineering and advanced manufacturing!

These workshops are designed to fit into a 45 - 60 minute class period and are led by NTC's School of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing staff.

These activities are designed for students in 7th grade and up.

Available workshops include:

  • Pore Decisions - A Wood Species Identification Workshop - In this fast-paced, Jenga-inspired activity, students investigate the unique grain structures and pore characteristics of various woods. As they analyze exposed surfaces, they must carefully remove specific blocks to score points while keeping their tower standing.
  • Paper Estates - An Architectural Design Workshop - Winter is coming! In this structural design challenge, participants apply architectural principals to build paper structures that resist snow load forces. By mastering load transfer though columns, beams, walls, and slabs, they'll uncover the importance of efficiency and material optimization in architectural design.
  • Getting Lean with Lego - A Lean Manufacturing Workshop - Utilizing LEGO to simulate a real automotive assembly line, students will implement principles of Lean Manufacturing to make their work easier and minimize disruptions while improving efficiency, eliminating waste and reducing time-to-market.
  • Apes of Wrath - A Civil Engineering Workshop - Students compete in a challenge against their classmates to build a skyscraper foundation that supports as much weight (in the form of giant pre-historic apes), as possible. Only by incorporating the appropriate geosynthetic materials will the sand hold together and the structure not tumble!
