This 36- hour certificate program will provide learners a foundational understanding of the unique issues faced when managing and operating a nonprofit organization.  This course is designed for those who work or wish to work in a non-profit setting, particularly for those in management and leadership roles.  This program consists of five individual modules: Effective Non-Profit Leadership,  Non-Profit Operations Management, Human Resources Essentials, Board and Volunteer Engagement, and Fundraising Fundamentals.

Kick-Off Session

February 3, 2026 8:30am – 10:00am

This short session will serve the purpose to introduce all attendees and instructors to each other before the program begins with ice breakers and some discussion activities, level-set our ‘why are we here’ by identifying our shared goals, establishing program expectations and outline, and introducing students to our online learning platform. 

Module 1: Effective Nonprofit Leadership

February 10 & 17, 2026   8:30am - 11:30am

Instructor: Tim McKeough

This course will develop individual’s capacity for leadership and establish application in a nonprofit organizational setting.  The course will discuss varieties of leadership styles and their strengths and weaknesses, how to deliver effective feedback, motivating and influencing others, and conflict negotiation. 

Module 2: Nonprofit Operations Management

February 24 & March 3, 2026   8:30am - 11:30am

Instructor: Tim McKeough

This course will address the fundamental operations management issues in a non-profit organizational setting.  Beginning with creating a vision and mission statement that align the organization’s strategic goals with outcomes, this course will identify practices in budgeting, finance, and resource allocation to ensure successful operations of a nonprofit. This course will also discuss nonprofit governance and the role of the board of directors.

Module 3: Human Resources Essentials

March 10 & 17, 2026   8:30am - 11:30am

Instructor: Kalli Yaklyvich, SHRM-SCP

This course will cover the legal and ethical considerations in hiring, management, and operational practices of a nonprofit organization. Case studies will be used to understand legal practices around hiring, performance reviews, discrimination, workforce harassment, and confidentiality practices.

Module 4: Fundraising Fundamentals

March 31 & April 7, 206    8:30am - 11:30am

This course will discuss the foundational basics to a quality funds development program, how to maximize fundraising opportunities, and the different techniques available.  This course will focus on the importance of annual giving, special events, and donor development. They feed into each other and also lead to major gifts and capital campaigns.

Module 5: Branding, Marketing and Public Relations

March 14 & 21, 2026    8:30am - 11:30am

In today’s crowded nonprofit landscape, a compelling brand story and strategic marketing approach are essential for engaging donors, volunteers, and the communities you serve. This session explores how nonprofits can clarify and communicate their unique identity through effective storytelling, targeted marketing strategies, practical digital tools, and proactive public relations. Participants will learn how to align mission-driven messaging with marketing efforts that elevate visibility, build trust, and strengthen organizational impact.

Module 6: Board and Volunteer Engagement

April 28 & May 5, 2026    8:30am - 11:30am

Volunteers can be incredible catalysts for growth and change in today’s nonprofits. But, in our ever-changing environment, it’s more challenging than ever to engage, attract, and retain this precious resource. This course will discuss creating a culture of engagement within organizations from the board members to the community volunteers.

DELIVERY

The program will intend on being delivered with in-person weekly classes. The classes will take place at Northcentral Technical College at 1000 W Campus Dr, Wausau, WI 54401.  A hybrid/virtual attendance option will be available to expand accessibility to the program.

LEARNING FORMAT

Class facilitation will consist of lecture/presentation, learning activities, and group discussions.  Program participants will be expected to engage in group discussions offering case study examples while maintaining confidentiality. Short homework tasks may be assigned and will be expected to be completed by the following class meeting. Instructors will provide direct contact information to participants.  Participants will be allowed one missed class date, but must make up work outside of class.
