In a season filled with academic milestones and new beginnings, Northcentral Technical College (NTC) celebrated a unique and heartwarming achievement – mother and son, side by side in caps and gowns, proudly graduating together this spring.
This commencement was more than a ceremony for the Grondin family – it was a testament to resilience and determination. JP Grondin graduated from the automotive technology program, and his mother, Denise Grondin, earned her degree in early childhood education.
Denise had been working in graphic communications for 14 years before her employer closed, and she faced uncertainty about her next steps. Rather than letting the setback define her, she chose to pursue a new path – one aligned with her passion for nurturing young children.
“It was scary to go back and start from the beginning,” she said. “I’m very thankful that I went back.”
With the support of her instructors, Denise thrived in the early childhood education program.
“This career was totally different, going into this program I didn’t know anything,” she said. “I got so much information from the courses and instructors. They’re great and helped guide me.”
Denise currently works at a local childcare center as a lead teacher and will continue to work there after graduation.
“I love working with the kids, seeing their eyes light up when they accomplish something,” she said. “You know you’re doing a good job when they give you the biggest hug. I enjoy getting to know their parents and families. We're all in it together teaching their children.”
While his mom was learning how to educate the next generation, JP was busy getting his hands greasy in the automotive lab. He has always been handy and enjoys working with cars.
After graduation, he plans to find a job in the field. Ultimately, one day he hopes to have his own shop and run his own business.
“I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs in school and my personal life,” JP said. “I’m glad I came and stuck through the program.”
He said the automotive technology program helped him a lot with building his confidence and expanding his knowledge of the work. He said the instructors are all very knowledgeable and willing to help students.
“It’s a really great program,” he said. “I would recommend it to anyone; it gives you that fundamental understanding of how and why we do what we do.”
Both Denise and JP encourage everyone to ask questions and never stop learning.
Now, with graduation day behind them, both are looking forward to their next chapter. Being able to walk across the stage knowing her son did the same is an experience Denise said she will never forget.
Their story is a reminder that success isn’t limited and that education can be powerful for transformation – no matter where the road begins.
“It’s never too late to start,” Denise said. “And doing it with my son made it even more special.”
