Artificial intelligence is reshaping how students learn, and Northcentral Technical College (NTC) is helping them build the skills to use it thoughtfully and responsibly.

Sarah Watson, an economics instructor at NTC, incorporates AI into her courses as a tool that supports learning, critical thinking and exploration.

Rather than using AI to generate answers, Watson encourages students to engage with it as a thought partner.

“It’s not taking their place,” she said. “It’s something that can support and supplement.”

Through guided classroom activities, students learn how to evaluate AI-generated information, identify potential biases and compare outputs against course content and real-world knowledge.

One of Watson’s favorite assignments invites students to simulate conversations with historical or contemporary political figures using generative AI. Afterward, students fact-check the responses, analyze what information may be missing and determine how accurately the AI reflects the individual’s viewpoints. The project strengthens research skills while reinforcing the importance of critical evaluation.

Watson said she believes exposing students to AI in the classroom prepares them for the realities of the modern workplace. By learning how to use AI in a structured environment, students gain confidence and experience before encountering these tools in their careers.

“Humans are creative,” Watson said. “It’s important to show students that they already possess those skills. AI is just a tool that can help them practice, explore ideas, and serve as a thought partner - something that can support them along the way.”

By combining emerging technology with critical thinking, NTC is preparing students to navigate an AI-driven future while maintaining the human insight, creativity and judgment that remain essential across every industry.
