The Video Production program is preparing students to use AI effectively and ethically by weaving it into the process, from pre to post production.
“By teaching these skills and making students aware of those tools, how to apply them practically and ethically is an important part of their training as they go into the industry and encounter these tools,” said Jordan Innes, Video Production instructor.
One example comes from the capstone project, where students must meet with a client as part of their final project. To help them practice, faculty created a chatbot to act as a mock client. Students interacted with it by asking questions, gathering details and building a production plan. That rehearsal gave them confidence before meeting their real clients face-to-face.
On the technical side, AI tools are saving time. Using auto-transcription to cut interviews has streamlined post-production. Tasks that once required a large crew, a big budget or years of experience can now be achieved quickly with generative tools. This has opened up new creative possibilities for students while teaching them practical skills that make workflows more efficient.
“It’s just another tool in their kit that they can use to supplement and enhance their work,” Jordan said. “It’s not there to completely replace their creativity.”
