A Note From Your Student
I’m working hard to reach my goals, and your support means more than you know. Going to college—especially while also juggling work, family and life—can be exciting, overwhelming and everything in between.
If you’re wondering how to best support me during this time, this list offers a few helpful ideas. Every student’s journey is different but knowing you’re in my corner makes all the difference.
Be Patient With My Schedule
College takes time—especially when I’m balancing school, work and family. I may not always be as available, but I still care. Your understanding means everything.
Celebrate Small Wins With Me
Whether I pass a test, submit a big assignment or just make it through a tough week—help me recognize the progress I’m making. A little encouragement goes a long way.
Give Me Space to Focus
Sometimes I’ll need quiet time to study, think or just breathe. Helping me protect that space (and time) shows you believe in what I’m working toward.
Ask How You Can Help—Then Really Listen
Even small things like running an errand, making dinner or watching the kids for an hour can lift a big weight. Let’s talk about what support looks like for me right now.
Remind Me Why I Started
On hard days, I might doubt myself. Remind me of my goals, my strengths and how far I’ve already come.
Avoid Guilt Trips
If I miss a family event or can’t hang out like I used to, it’s not personal—it’s temporary. Guilt makes it harder to focus and succeed.
Be Proud of Me
Just hearing you say “I’m proud of you” can give me the motivation to keep going, especially when things get tough.
Respect My Boundaries
Sometimes I may say “no” or need to reschedule. Trust that I’m doing what I need to do to manage everything the best I can.
Learn With Me When You Can
Ask about what I’m studying, help quiz me or just let me share something I learned. It shows you’re interested and involved.
Stick With Me—This Journey Isn’t Forever
College is a season. Your support through it will make all the difference in how far I go.
As a college student, my information and records are protected through FERPA. This means supportive others who want to review my progress and records will need to have permission first. For more information about FERPA, please visit ntc.edu/policies/notification-rights-under-ferpa.
