This course covers nursing management and professional issues related to the role of the registered nurse. Emphasis is placed on preparing for practice as a registered nurse.

This course will cover topics related to the delivery of community and mental health care. Specific health needs of individuals, families, and groups will be addressed across the lifespan. Attention will be given to diverse and at-risk populations. Mental health concepts will concentrate on adaptive/maladaptive behaviors and specific mental health disorders. Community resources will be examined in relation to specific types of support offered to racial, ethnic, economically diverse individuals and groups.
Develops writing skills which include prewriting, drafting, revising and editing. A variety of writing assignments are designed to help the learner analyze audience and purpose, research and organize ideas and format and design documents based on subject matter and content. Prepares learners to perform basic nursing skills under the supervision of a nurse for job entry as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or a home health aide (HHA) in health care agencies. Face-to-face and hybrid classroom, campus lab and clinical instruction are offered at various nursing homes and hospitals throughout the district. Students need to submit an application and complete background check.
Analyzing and applying argumentation strategies are the primary skills developed in English Composition 2. Learners will conduct reading and writing synthesis techniques to strengthen high-level research, critical thinking and composition skills. Learners will use credible primary and secondary sources to write arguments using an appropriate format based on the audience and the writing taskâs purpose. Introduces students to the creative writing process in order to produce original poetry and prose using formal elements and literary aesthetics. Students will read and analyze creative works to better understand the genres they will be writing in. Students will collaborate with their classmates during the writing process through writerâs workshops in order to learn the importance of peer review and editing. Students will select one of their works to polish and prepare for publication.
Introduces learners to the forms, functions, and merits of childrenâs literature through the evaluation of both classic and contemporary texts. Learners will read works for a variety of age levels and undertake a variety of learning activities and projects to explore historical and cultural contexts for, and influences upon, childrenâs literature; gain an understanding of the various genres; and, develop an appreciation of the impact of art and illustration as storytelling tools.
Explores communication in media and media literacy by providing insight into the important issues that confront students as consumers and purveyors of mass media within the workforce and in society. The mass media revolution, including media technologies, the evolution of media content and platforms, including new media, the impact of media communications on business and society as a whole, media bias, and media law and ethics from the basis of the course. Examines the steps required to conduct legal research, identifying and applying basic research techniques. Explores electronic research using software and publicly available information. Learners draft legal documents, letters, and memoranda, using appropriate legal terminology and citation.
Examines the family relationship and the laws surrounding marriage, dissolution of marriage, parentage and family rights. Explains the parties and issues related to family law matters. Learners outline the steps required in a family law proceeding and prepare the required legal documents for various family law matters.
Explores the requirements for good law office administration. Focus on the legal team and how paralegals fit within the paradigm of the legal profession. Learners examine legal administration and practice management, as well as legal fees, client relations, client trust accounts, case management and legal marketing.
Experiential learning in the context of a law firm, corporation, non-profit or governmental agency. Learners develop skills and abilities to work in the industry, apply the law and legal procedures, conduct legal research, write letters and memorandums, draft documents, contact clients or individuals, and maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.
Examines criminal law and criminal procedure. Explores federal and state court systems as well as defines the categories of crime and legal defenses. Learners identify the concepts involved in criminal proceedings and outline the stages of criminal litigation from the arrest through trial and post-trial procedures.
Examines the software and technology used in the law office, including: billing software, case management software, litigation support software and an introduction to electronic discovery. Learners review demonstrations and simulations of legal software.
Examines contract capacity and contract formation. Interprets contract terms and recognizes contract forms. Learners discuss and interpret creditor/debtor relations in relation to contract law. Learners explore and differentiate remedies available for breach of contract.
Explains the basics of the law, the paralegal profession, career opportunities, and ethical concerns as they relate to paralegals. Learners examine the individual legal topics and practice areas they will study throughout the program, preparing them for success in the Paralegal Program.
