Thursday, November 19, 2020 - Ethics in the Clinical Relationship presented by Mark Sanders

In this presentation you will learn: Principle that guide ethical decision making in the clinical relationship; the Iatrogenic effect and ethical dilemmas; ethics in a trauma informed system of care; the impact of therapist "unfinished business" and ethical dilemmas; how to establish healthy boundaries in the clinical relationship; how pandemics like COVID-19 impact boundaries and ethics; boundaries of physical touch and verbal communication; transference, counter-transference and ethical dilemmas; Ethics and termination.

Objectives: By the end of this workshop you will:

  • Be able to utilize 8 principles which can guide ethical decision making
  • Be aware of how counselor unfinished business can impact ethics
  • Be able to establish healthy boundaries in the clinical relationship
  • Be aware of 5 types of transference and how they can impact ethics
  • Be able to use counter-transference as a gift to avoid ethical dilemmas
  • Be able to terminate the clinical relationship in an ethical manner

Meet the Presenters

Lorie A. Goeser has over 30 plus years in the Substance Abuse Counseling field and 15 plus years in the Occupational Therapy Field working with people who are dealing with life challenges, helping them to move forward in healing to gain recovery from substance abuse, mental health and physical challenges.  Lorie is a national speaker and trainer and an Independent Clinical Supervisor, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant. Lorie is UW Madison Alumni and Madison College graduate with a career long focus on helping clients who are facing daunting challenges from the criminal justice system with substance abuse, mental health and physical symptoms to those who are dealing with acute medical institutions. Providing direct care services, supervising staff, program development, student supervision and nurturing support of resilience building for staff providing the services on a daily basis.

Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC, is an international speaker, trainer, and consultant in the behavioral health field whose work has reached thousands throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Caribbean and British Islands. Mark has been a certified addictions counselor for 34 years. He has received numerous awards including a Life Time Achievement Award from the Illinois Addiction Counselor Certification Board and the Barbara Bacon Award for outstanding contributions to the Social Work profession as a Loyola University of Chicago Alumni. Mark is co-founder of Serenity Academy of Chicago, the only recovery high school in Illinois. He is past president of the board of the Illinois Chapter of NAADAC. He has had a 30 year career as a university educator having taught at the University of Chicago, Illinois State University, Illinois School of Professional Psychology, and Loyola University of Chicago, School of Social Work.
