Accuplacer Retest Policy

Students are permitted to retest after working with a College Prep Center instructor for a minimum of 4 hours to review content material. CPC instructors will help determine if the student is ready to retest through any combination of Accuplacer practice, TABE assessment, and/or alternate assessment that covers the retest content areas. CPC instructors will verify the student has reviewed material for the required minimum amount of time, if not more, and has successfully completed practice materials.

ACCUPLACER tests have high test-retest reliability coefficient, a measure of consistency of scores obtained by the same person when reexamined with the same test on different occasions. This means that if students retest without review and study, there is a high probability that their scores will not change appreciably. A review of ACCUPLACER data shows that two weeks is the optimal waiting period since it allows students adequate time to locate study materials and sufficient time to review them.

Apprenticeship Testing

  • Apprenticeship test battery consists of five parts: 1. mechanical reasoning, 2. spatial relations, 3. arithmetic, 4. quantitative reasoning, algebra and statistics, and 5. reading comprehension
  • Mechanical Reasoning – the Bennett Mechanical Comprehension Test (BMCT) is the most widely used and trusted assessment of mechanical aptitude.  The test measures mechanical reasoning ability and working knowledge of basic mechanical operations and physical laws
  • Spatial Relations – The Differential Aptitude Test: Next Generation measures the ability to visualize a three-dimensional object from a two dimensional pattern, and to visualize how this object would look if rotated in space. Space relations predict success in positions that require the ability to mentally create and manipulate images derived from written plans.
  • Accuplacer – This test measures a student’s academic skill level in the areas of arithmetic; quantitative reasoning, algebra and statistics and reading comprehension.
  • Fees: $25 for Accuplacer, $30 for Bennett Mechanical, $25 for Spatial Relations
  • Scores for all three tests will be available within 3 business days.

UWSP at Wausau Math Placement Testing

  • The math placement test is not a test that has a grade. The purpose of the placement test is to help us determine which math class you should start with. The test includes questions from beginning algebra to calculus.
  • NTC students will need to take the UW math placement test if they plan to take a math or science class through UWSP at Wausau that has a math prerequisite they haven’t met or if they have not taken any math classes at NTC yet.
  • For students requesting test accommodations, before scheduling an exam, they must first email Tim O’Connor at tmoconno@wisc.edu and provide the following information:
    • Name
    • Email address
    • Date of birth
    • Campus they plan to attend (UWSP at Wausau)
    • Accommodations being requested
    • Documentation verifying the disability and need for the accommodations
      • Students can send a copy of their NTC accommodations as documentation for the placement test accommodations.
      • If the student does not have accommodations at NTC yet, their documentation should be either a letter on High School letterhead from your counselor or someone else at the school familiar with your accommodations, stating what those accommodations have been for tests such as the ACT, or a current IEP or 504 plan. The IEP or 504 Plan must be from within the last three years.
