Develops learner's ability to design and create construction drawings for a one-story residence including: foundation and floor plans, wall and stair sections and elevations (AutoCAD 2D software will be utilized). Design and analysis of joist, stair, and roof design is also covered.
Provides instruction in the design and preparation of working drawings for a tri-level residence on a city lot to meet local and state codes. Learners will prepare drawings for bidding as produced in an architectural or custom design office. Coursework will include the preparation of site plans, floor plans, foundation plans, elevations, sections, framing plans and finish schedules. Special emphasis is placed on utilizing high efficiency approaches to building construction.
Explores the latest version of Autodesk's AutoCAD program as a 2D design, drafting and visualization tool. Provides learners with skill development starting at an introductory level and progressing to a level in which authentic architectural construction graphics and working drawings including annotations can be developed.
This Basic Motorcycle Rider course consists of classroom and range instruction designed for beginning riders and was developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The Basic Rider Course covers preparing to ride, turning, shifting and braking, street strategies, special situations, increasing riding skills, maintenance and insurance. Instructors are certified by the MSF and Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). It is taught off-street, out of traffic, and motorcycles and helmets are provided. In addition there is a 5 hour ECourse that must be completed within 30 days prior to class(fees for ECourse are included in the overall class price).
This Basic Motorcycle Rider 2 course consists of classroom and range instruction designed for riders with their Wisconsin Motorcycle Instruction Permit who are either returning to riding or are seeking a refresher course to practice and/or seeking their motorcycle license or endorsement (already licensed or endorsed riders may also participate). Any person over the age of 16 may enroll in this course. The student must already possess basic riding skills such as starting out, stopping, and turning. Students must bring their own 2 wheel motorcycle which may be a manual or automatic. Students must provide proof of registration and insurance for the motorcycle they will be using. In addition there is a 4 hour ECourse that must be completed within 30 days prior to class(fees for ECourse are included in the overall class price) The in-person portion consists of eight range exercises, including a screening exercise to verify participants have sufficient skill to continue. This course may also be used to waive the road test when applying for the Wisconsin Motorcycle license, as long as the student also completes the E-Course.
Explores the methods of calculating building loads and subsequent analysis of their effect on structural members. Examines topics including: the design of floor joists, headers, basement beams, tall walls and columns in residential and light commercial construction. Conventional lumber, manufactured lumber and steel beams and columns will be sized by standard calculations and manufacture/third party computer software.
Introduces the learner to the fundamental materials and methods of residential construction. Explores foundations, framing, roofing, interior and exterior wall coverings, trim, stairs and insulation. Explores innovative design techniques, energy efficient construction practices, energy conservation methods and alternative energy systems through classroom discussion and lab activities. Analyzes code and application pertaining to methods and materials.
Introduces the learner to the application of principles of mechanical systems, which includes: electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Heat loss calculations will be completed in both long-hand and computer based. A systems approach to environmentally responsible and sustainable homes will be addressed and studied.
Explores the fundamental principles of architectural design and drafting. Examine topics including: career exploration, sustainable-residential design, industry related practices and procedures, State of Wisconsin building codes, area planning, and sketching application.
Introduces learners to the fundamentals of management in the areas of construction and project management. Identification of the types of organizations, positions and responsibilities, subcontract relationships and insurance requirements for contractors, project management and public/labor relationships and scheduling contracts and documents.
Introduces the learner to Building Information Modeling (BIM) by using the latest version of Autodesk's Revit. Revit is a computer modeling program that allows for intelligent, 3D and parametric object-based design. Learners explore the program by the use of tutorials and exercises that start at an introductory level proceeding throughout the semester to create a complete set of residential construction documents.
